Part 4. Dylan Bigby, of Retired Belts.

The unique design of Retired Belts utilizes used Randonneur tires, making them both an aesthetically pleasing accessory and giving them a functional purpose. The resilience of the tires enables you to carry your U-lock(s) in between you and the belt without stretching out over time. The use of high quality brass snaps replaces a belt buckle, which might become uncomfortable in a riding position. The belt develops similar wearing characteristics of leather, becoming smoother, softer and shinier over its lifetime.
Each retired belt is one-of-a-kind, customized exclusively for the owner. This belt is a symbolic representation of track bike riding in San Francisco, as they are re-purposed from tires gifted from skillfully exceptional riders, many of them Macaframa riders. The individually distinct skid patterns on your Retired Belt reflect each riders’ experience on the tire and their ventures through the city.

Keirin: Leaders Always Going to Lead.

Keirin: Speed Racers on Nowness.com.
Inside the High-Octane and Lucrative World of Japan’s Cycling Spectacle
Before fixed-gear bikes became de rigueur for urban aesthetes, they were the weapon of choice for Japan’s fearless Keirin cyclists. A gladiatorial incarnation of track cycling that dates back to 1948, the Japanese sporting phenomenon operates by an intricate set of rules that sees competitors jostling for position on steeply banked tracks at lightning fast speeds, all but encouraging spectacular crashes. In today's film for NOWNESS, Jonathan de Villiers (whose fashion photography and portraiture has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Wallpaper* and Fantastic Man) traveled to the national Keirin school in Tokyo and the Tachikawa and Yokkaichi velodromes to decode the strategy that governs the racing phenomenon. “I knew next to nothing about it when I went,” says de Villiers, “but I'm a big admirer of the anthropological documentary where you get taken into a whole different world. And what a strange, special and complex universe it turned out to be.” The state-run industry amasses tens of billions of dollars in gambling revenue each year. To read about the Tokyo-based bicycle design company that has won the affections of cyclists around the world.

The 5th Annual Supermarket Street Sweep! 12/4/2010

I was fortunate to be apart of "The Supermarket Street Sweep" last year.  Killer race through the bustling streets of SF with multiple check-points.  An unusual alley cat in that it requires racers to check in at various supermarkets spread out through San Francisco to purchase non-perishable food. The race is split into two divisions: speed or cargo. Racers for the speed race expect to spend anywhere from $15-30, and the cargo racers spend hundreds of dollars. It takes a financial commitment to contribute to this amazing event. Last year the event raised 7,507 lbs of food, which is over 6,000 meals! Great race for a great cause. Check out the photo opt - 1st column, 2nd row.

Race Details

WHEN: Saturday, December 4th, High Noon.

WHERE: Cupid Span's (Bow & Arrow) at Folsom and Embarcadero.

CARGO RACE: Bring back the heaviest load of food from the designated grocery stores.

SPEED RACE: Buy specific food items from the designated grocery stores and get to the finish as soon as possible.

WHAT TO BRING: Bag, box or crate (whatever you rock to the grocery store), a lock and money to buy items (suggested $15-30, whatever is comfy, everything helps).

Both races end @ 4pm. Prize party to follow.

All items will be donated to the San Francisco Food Bank.

Recap: St. Jude's Alley cat Fundraiser.

Photos from St. Jude Children's Hospital alley cat fundraiser.  My first in Oakland and out of 61 riders I placed 21st. Not bad for being lost half of the time. 35 miles of long hilly windy roads.

Fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Hospital

It's about that time again for another race. I enjoy making it to these bike races especially if it is for a good cause. The "Race to Save St. Jude Children's Research Hospital" fundraiser. Got myself a little training to do, this alley cat race is a bit short of 45 miles total.
